MetaLocator provides the ability for visitors to your locator to manage their own profiles by "claiming" a profile, which may represent a dealer, store location or person, depending on how you're using MetaLocator.  

Once claimed and approved the user can log in and edit certain data.  This allows you to "crowdsource" your location content, either by allowing users to submit new locations, or edit existing locations.

Submitting new locations is available through our Location Form Layout.  This functionality is available to all MetaLocator users, but only allows visitors to submit information.  The ability to edit an existing location requires the creation of a user account and is only available to users with our Crowd Sourcing Add On.

Notice

Existing administrative users can not claim locations.  For testing as a claiming user, use an email address not known to MetaLocator.  Gmail users can claim locations by appending a + and any term to their email username.

Claiming Locations

In order to edit an existing location, a user must claim that location.  Clicking the "Claim this location" link on any location will present this form, allowing the user to request access to edit the location:

Once submitted, the account owner will receive a notification that this user has requested access.  As an administrator, choose User Manager from the User menu as shown here:

Two levels of approval are required.  First, the administrator must approve the request to create the user account.  If the user account is not approved, the user will not be able to login.  Click the red icon in the Enabled column to approve the user.

Once approved, if this user has never logged in, this action will trigger an email to the requesting user which allows them to choose an account password.  They log in using the email address they used to request permission.  This will not provide them any access to location content yet.  To approve their request to manage the location, click their email address.  Below their account information, you will see each location access request and a link to optionally approve each request.

Clicking the red icon in the Approved column will allow the user to manage the location.  This will also trigger an email to the user notifying them that their request has been approved.  To retract access, click the green "Approved" icon to disable access.  The user will not receive an email regarding access retraction.

Once approved as a user and the user has access to a location, they are free to manage that location without administrative approval.  Any new locations created by Crowdsourcing users will be submitted for approval, but similarly, once approved, they are free to edit and change content.

Adding New Locations

If a user wants to add a location not already in the database, you can provide a link on your Web site to "Create a user account" or "manage locations" by creating a link on your Website as follows:

You can also present a one-way form on your Web site, using our Form Layout.  This is a submit-only form that allows users to submit location data for administrative approval.  That data, once published would be available to "Claim" & "Manage" from the locator.

Adding a link to Claim Locations

In order for a user to claim a location, they need a link to click on.  This location is displayed in the Interface in one of the Templates, depending on where it should appear.  Add the {claim} tag to the desired template.  Add {claim rel='modal'} to have that window open in a modal popup.  For information on managing Templates, see this tutorial.

Once the link is available, users will see this (or similar, depending on your layout preferences)

Once clicked, it raises a form as shown below.

Appealing via email to submit and update content

Our users are often hoping that their audience will submit or edit content organically.  However, the more common scenario is that potential content contributors must be asked directly, and often repeatedly before they choose to contribute.

To do this, an email such as the below example might be useful in requesting content contributions:

Dear Stockist,

Thank you for carrying Widgets in your store.  We are excited to share an opportunity with you that will enhance your business location's online presence and increase awareness of the products you stock.  Widget Co. has launched a new Website with a powerful product locator.  We want to ensure your location is represented as completely and accurately as possible.  This promotional opportunity is a free service from Widget Co.

To update your free listing, click here to find your store, and click the link to "Claim this location".  Once approved, you'll receive a link to update your location content.  The process is simple and easy and improves your location's visibility online.
