Phone numbers are a critical call-to-action in your results. They are among the most commonly requested data attributes and should be presented prominently in and in a manner that can be measured by the analytics system.
There are two methods of ensuring phone numbers can be tracked: Click to View and Click to Call.
Click to view shows the phone number to the user only after they click a link to reveal the contents of the full phone number. This avoids the un-trackable situation where a user sees the phone number and picks up their phone with and places a call without further interaction. With Click to View in place, the user must click to reveal the remainder of the phone number to see the full number. This event is tracked and can be used to determine the exact number of times the end user requested the phone number.
The default behavior is below, notice a partial display of the phone number is shown.
Instead of the ellipsis display, the Link Text value can be updated to include a specific call to action as shown below:
Click to Call
To make phone numbers clickable on your Interface, set the Template for the Phone field to Phone - Linked. This can be found in the Interface Builder under Results > List > Phone as shown below.
This is the default setting in most interfaces. This causes mobile phones and desktops with a calling program installed to instantly call the clicked phone number. This also triggers the "Click to Call" analytics event.
Formatting Phone Number Data
When importing data, we highly recommend including phone numbers in a standard or at least consistent format. Ensuring each phone number has an area code, and country code in international deployments, ensures that click-to-call functions will operate as expected.
